Christmas morning is one of the most anticipated moments in a child's year. But it can also be one of the most chaotic. Here are some of the small rituals and thoughtful touches that transform it from hectic to genuinely enchanting.
Start the night before
The magic of Christmas morning begins on Christmas Eve. Leave out a mince pie and a glass of milk for Father Christmas, a carrot for the reindeer, and — if you have one — a letter from Santa's Letterbox on the mantelpiece. The anticipation of what morning will bring is half the magic.
Let them find it themselves
If you've ordered a personalised letter from Father Christmas, consider placing it on the doormat or the kitchen table before your children wake up. The moment they discover it — addressed to them, in their name, with a Lapland postmark — is something they'll remember for years.
Slow down
The temptation is to rush through the unwrapping. Resist it. Let each gift be opened slowly, savoured, talked about. The morning is long. There's no hurry.
Create a ritual
Whether it's a special Christmas breakfast, a particular song that plays while presents are opened, or a tradition of reading the Father Christmas letter aloud together — rituals give children something to look forward to and look back on.
Put the phones down
Take a few photographs, by all means. But then put the phone away and be present. The look on a child's face when they read a letter from Father Christmas — that's not something you need to film. It's something you need to witness.
